Buy Telescope Online? What’s the Downside Anyway?
Where should I buy a telescope – Should I buy online and why?
Welcome to our site on buying a telescope (online)! If you’ve landed here and are really just trying to quickly find a good place to buy your telescope (i.e. you already have a good idea of what you want), I would suggest you just jump on over to Amazon and buy one there: They have great prices, good selection, they are very reputable and secure, so you can’t really go wrong. If you have more of a specialty scope in mind, or you want more detailed information, they may not be the best place as they focus more on common/popular brands and models that the mass market buys, and they do not tend to have a great deal of information available about their telescopes…I would recommend you try Telescopes.com in that case. Good luck and happy shopping!
Moving on to the details of the TOPIC of this site: Buy A Telescope (online, of course??):
So, you are thinking about buying a telescope and you’re wondering Where you should buy a telescope, and should you buy online?
These are common questions we all ask of ourselves when we’ve decided we want to buy a telescope, but we’re not really sure where to go. Why the uncertainty and consternation? Because, we want to ensure we make the right selection, don’t get ripped off and do it as quickly and conveniently as possible. Of course!
Like anything, you can buy a telescope through various channels including, large retail stores, specialty stores, catalogs and online. And that’s just it: Buying a telescope is just like buying anything else – there are advantages to doing it online versus offline, as well as disadvantages. In other words, there’s nothing special/unusual about telescopes that makes buying offline a particular advantage. So, since we’re talking about telescopes here, I won’t address other types of purchases, but the same logic applies….
Advantages of Buying a Telescope Online:
- Selection: Depending on where you live, you may have virtually no local/bricks-and-mortar stores to visit to ask questions and
get up and personal with potential telescopes. Online however, you can virtually research and buy any model in existence! If you happen to be fortunate enough to live near a store that specializes in telescopes, by all means, you would probably want to visit that store, ask questions and actually see the scopes you may purchase.
- Convenience: Obviously, one of the best reasons to buy online is that you can do this from the comfort of your home! This is especially advantageous if you already know what you want to buy, and you’re just looking for the a few facts and a good price and a safe/reliable online retailer to buy from;
- Price: Buying online is OFTEN, if not usually, cheaper than buying in a physical store because of the savings over having a brick and mortar telescope store.
Disdvantages of Buying a Telescope Online:
- Security: While this is not really an issue these days as most online vendors are very secure, there certainly is from our perspective the concern over security: Will I get what I paid for? Will they steal my credit card info? They’re legitimate concerns, but as I said, you really do not need to worry much these days if you look for a couple of indicators: Reputation, System Security, Guarantees. Regarding security, just look for the following: Extended Validation (EV) SSL (FYI: you can determine that a site is using SSL via the URL: Instead of HTTP://… you will see HTTPS://….);
- You Can’t See and Feel it In-Peron: This is the big one for me, unless of course I already know exactly what I want alreay, and just need to find the right price and retailer…It’s nice to touch and play with an item before you purchase it. However, keep in mind that all telescopes operate similarly, so if you’re already familiary with using them, as long as you do your research reviews, product specs, etc), you should be just fine – you just want have the addtional comfort of having handled the item, before you purchase it (not all physical retailers will have all the models you may want to buy open/on display anyway, so this really matters less and less);
- Shipping: This is not so much of an issue in most cases as it’s often free, and if not, the whole delivery system is so well developed, efficient and inexpensive you don’t need to worry much. Do make sure you get insurance if it’s not included; since buying a telescope is not like buying a T-shirt if there’s a problem. The real bummer for me is that you can’t get it right away – there’s not that instant gratification. Then again, the anticipation of it arriving is fun too….
So, to make the most of buying a telescope online, you simply keep a few things in mind and get informed about telescopes in general. BEFORE you go out and buy a telescope, you should be clear about what you really want or even more important needs: A small amount spent on any books or eBooks can save you a lot of wasted money. Also, before buying a telescope for your child, take him or her out skywatching for an evening if you can.
Again, if you are just looking for a place to buy and you have a pretty good idea of what you want, try:
Or
Good luck and enjoy stargazing with your new telescope!!
